A pedalboard turns a pile of loose guitar pedals into an organized, reliable system that you can set up and tear down in minutes. Instead of crawling around on the floor connecting cables before every rehearsal, you plug in two cables and you are ready to play.

Choosing the Board

Pedalboards come in three basic forms: flat boards, angled boards, and modular rail systems. Pedaltrain is the most popular brand, offering sizes from a compact Nano (14 x 5.5 inches) to the massive Pro (32 x 16 inches).

Their aluminum rail construction is lightweight and makes cable management straightforward. For most guitarists with four to eight pedals, the Pedaltrain Classic Jr works well. You can also build a board from a piece of plywood for about $15 in materials.

Planning the Layout

Before attaching anything permanently, lay your pedals out on the board and experiment with placement. Put the pedals you stomp most frequently in the most accessible positions, usually the front row.

Signal chain order matters: tuner, wah, compressor, overdrive and distortion, modulation (chorus, phaser, flanger), delay, and reverb. Leave a half inch to one inch gap between pedals for your foot.

Power Supply

A proper isolated power supply is the single best upgrade you can make to your pedalboard. Daisy-chaining power from a single adapter creates ground loops that introduce hum and noise.

An isolated supply provides each pedal with its own clean, independent power. The Voodoo Lab Pedal Power, Strymon Zuma, Cioks DC7, and Truetone CS series are all excellent. Match the supply to your pedals. Most standard pedals run on 9V DC center-negative, but some require 12V, 18V, or higher current. Mount the power supply underneath the board if your rail system allows it.

Patch Cables

The cables connecting your pedals matter.

Cheap patch cables with molded plastic connectors fail at the worst times and can introduce noise. Solderless cable kits from Evidence Audio, Lava Cable, and George L let you cut cables to exact lengths. Flat patch cables from EBS and Rockboard are useful for tight layouts. Keep cable runs as short as practical to preserve high-end frequencies.

Attaching Pedals to the Board

Velcro is the standard method. Apply the hook side (rough, scratchy) to the board surface and the loop side (soft, fuzzy) to the bottom of each pedal. Clean the bottom of each pedal with rubbing alcohol before applying velcro. Dual Lock is a stronger alternative but can be difficult to remove pedals from without prying.

Wiring It Up

Run your power cables first since they are less flexible. Then connect patch cables between pedals following your signal chain order. Route cables underneath the board wherever possible. Use cable ties or adhesive clips to secure them. Connect your guitar input cable to the first pedal and your output cable from the last pedal to your amp. Power everything on and test each pedal individually, then in combinations. Listen for unwanted noise or signal loss.
